I finally got the Korean word for fish. I had the guy at the tourist information office write it down for me and I show it when necessary. However, when I order food at a restaurant I look at the pictures. I discovered that the Korean word for ‘fish’ is ‘fishe’. They add an e at the end of English words ending with a consonant, an advantage of being a linguist. So I eat fish every couple of days. The rest of the meals are French pastry, fruits and milk.  On Sunday, I was walking along the raw fish market in sokcho city on the east coast, looking at the fresh fish and at people sitting at wooden tables and on the floor on the side walk and dipping slices of raw fish in a red sauce ping it in a green leaf.  Well, Korea is beautiful. The weather is very nice and cool. I do not feel tired and sleepy like I do in Malaysia. The people are nice and friendly as well, although it is difficult to communicate with them. But I try to use gestures and use my teaching skills to communicate. Maps are in both English and Korean. So if I need directions I just show the place on the map to people and they understand. Sometimes I feel frustrated and just give up. But it’s been a good experience. In Korea -1

I have just got back to the hotel and need to change. I walked the whole day. I do not and cannot do that in KL as it is hot and humid and I feel exhausted all the time. I feel so sleepy and want to go to bed around 7 p.m.

But here in Seoul, I feel more active and the pain that I have been having in my feet and legs (since I got to KL) is much better. The weather is very nice and cool. I went to the Royal Palace and gardens today and to a Korean traditional show (a one-hour show for $25). I video-taped it all. I’ll keep you posted about the tour. The conference is between Oct 2-5 and I go back to KL Oct 8 as I did not find reservation. I even had to leave early because my visa was supposed to expire Sep 24, 2002 and felt that it was not worth extending and paying money for only 4 days (I originally made reservation on Sep 28 but changed it.

Seoul is too crowded and different. It is hard to get around as people speak Korean and signs are in Korean. However, maps and subway are marked in both English and Korean. It is difficult to eat at the restaurants as they mainly serve pork. I
